[INSPIRATION] Rock and roll style

the vauxhalls

Adverts are a part of everyday life and in order to get noticed an advert needs to do something a bit different. Cue, the new advert from car company Vauxhall. Starring iconic British model and presenter Abbey Clancy, “The Vauxhalls” is a clever short film which subtly showcases Vauxhall’s newest addition: the Adam Rocks Air.

James Brown’s directorial debut is a celebration of the best of British rock and roll style and attitude.

We love the quintessential British rock and roll style of Abbey Clancy’s groupie character in the short film. A sort of Kate Moss-esque look which includes undone smokey eyes and bed hair!

The film captures the fictional, aspiring band, The Vauxhalls, preparing for a late night gig in London. Shot in an edgier new light, the film shows Abbey Clancy getting ready alongside her band, putting as much focus on her fashion selection as rehearsing for their performance.

She takes the wheel of the Adam Rocks Air, driving the band through London’s nightlife to the venue. Inspired by agile parkour athletes who negotiate urban spaces, the car features a state-of-the-art Intellilink infotainment system which plays the film’s soundtrack, “Heart Is a Beating Drum” by renowned rock duo The Kills (Jamie Hince – Kate Moss’s other half – and Alison Mosshart) and a full length electric folding canvas roof to embrace the open air.

[OUTFIT] Scandi Style

Cheap Monday x Specsavers sunglasses

Cheap Monday x Specsavers glasses

Here in the UK we seem to be having something of a love affair for all things Scandinavian in recent years. Here at Sugar & Spice we’ve not been immune to this, obsessing over Sarah Lund’s jumpers in The Killing and loving the girl power of Borgen. To the extent that my fiancé surprised me with a trip to Copenhagen for my recent thirtieth birthday! (We’ll be off to the Danish capital in July!)

Cheap Monday x Specsavers sunglasses

Scandinavian fashion is also having a moment. Scandinavian fashionistas are continually photographed by street style bloggers looking effortlessly cool.

Cheap Monday x Specsavers glasses

Imagine my delight then at being asked to try out the latest glasses collection at Specsavers by one of the original cool Scandi brands, Cheap Monday. Specsavers sent me a pair of sunglasses and glasses from the new collection to try out. As well as offering me the chance to complete my outfit with some other Cheap Monday goodies!

Cheap Monday x Specsavers sunglasses

Cheap Monday are known for their jeans collection and so I knew I had to choose a pair for my look. I’ve been missing black skinny jeans from my denim collection, so snapped up a pair. With summer here, I’m all about loose fitting, relaxed look pieces and the striped tank tee fits the bill perfectly.

Chep Monday x Specsavers glasses

I love the Cheap Monday glasses collection for Specsavers. Specsavers have been my go-to optician since I started wearing glasses three years ago. Their customer service and price points make them an ideal choice. This new collection is a definite step up. They are constantly collaborating (like the Orisis collection last year) but this latest collection is totally cool. Some of the glasses were a little too cool for me – think massive over sized frames and matt muted shades. So I chose two of the most conservative styles for my glasses. But if you’re up for it – there are some really unique styles. Plus, they’re included in the 2-4-1 offer and are priced at just £99 which includes lenses!!

Cheap Monday x Specsavers glasses

I’m so pleased with my choice. The everyday prescription glasses are much bolder than previous choices and I love them. They’re a proper statement pair of glasses. And the sunglasses are understated and cool.

Thanks to Specsavers and Cheap Monday for getting me ready for summer – and my trip to Copenhagen!

[INSPIRATION] Festival Fashion at Joules

It’s festival season and British lifestyle brand, Joules, have created a festival inspired video to get you in the mood for outdoor festival fun this summer:

Joules has a wide collection of products for packing for a festival this summer, whether you’re staying in the UK and off to Glastonbury or heading abroad to a festival in warmer clims, like Benicàssim, there’s something for every one. I’ve out together my wish list of festival fashion:

20140508-201008.jpgOf course, wellies and a poncho are essential if you’re off to a festival in the UK as rain is almost a guarantee. Make sure that you choose bright prints and shades to lift your mood when it does start to rain.

Choose a festival-ready floral dress or striped tunic for a simple and easy laid back look. A dress or tunic is the easiest option for all weathers. In the sun, wear it alone. If it’s chilly or wet, simply add leggings and a cardigan.

You’ll want your hands free but your valuables safe, so make sure to choose a cross body bag, like a leather satchel.

After a day walking around a festival site, take a seat – make sure to remember to pack one. Bonus points for a cute floral folding seat! And make sure you remember candles, lanterns and torches for night times at camp!

If you’ve missed out on tickets to a festival this summer, no need to worry, Joules have written an article on hosting your own festival in the comfort of your own garden!

Are you off to a festival this summer? What will you pack?

[HOW TO] Choose The Best Fitting Jeans

louis vuitton ss14

Jeans are a wardrobe essential and the fit of those jeans can make or break an outfit.

Jean trends come and go but once you’ve found your perfect fit, it sometimes pays to stick with them. Some women search for their ideal pair for years.

For me, skinny jeans are my first choice. But right now, I’m on the hunt for a pair of well fitting boyfriend fit jeans for the summer. Boyfriend jeans were hot on the catwalks for SS14 – as seen at Louis Vuitton (above) – and their relaxed fit makes them more comfortable for the warmer summer weather than skinny fit.

There’s one rule really for finding the perfect fit – try on everything! Whether you’re buying online or in store, try on as many different styles and fits as possible.

If you’re still struggling to find your perfect fit boyfriend style jeans, why not actually look to the men’s section. Apparently this is what many women are doing and are choosing Levi’s men’s original 501 jeans for a more relaxed style. Best of all, Buy Jeans have an offer on right now on men’s jeans for tailoring for an extra £5 – particularly useful if you’re on the petite side but still fancy trying a men’s fit.

For spring, I’ll be wearing my boyfriend fit jeans with this season’s totally on trend slip on trainers and a striped Breton tee – what could be more relaxed and stylish?!

How do you find jeans to fit you? What are your top tips?

[INSPIRATION] Dear Younger Me…

younger self

younger self

What would you tell your younger self? It’s one of those games people play isn’t it? It’s the opposite to those letters I remember contemporaries at school writing to their future self.

Since starting to commute by car daily (after years of walking to work) I have been listening to the radio more and more. One of my favourite ads right now is the Legal & General life insurance ad which covers this very topic. So a happy coincidence when I was asked the same company what I would tell my younger self. But what would you say? Part of growing up is the knowledge that you don’t know what will happen or that you can somehow change it…

I guess I’d tell the geeky 16 year old who thought she’d never find a boyfriend and who worried she’d never quite fit in that it would all be ok. That after a few frogs she’d find her prince and that she’d develop friendships that would last decades, not just 20 minutes at break time.

I’d tell my 20-something self who worried that she’d maybe chosen the wrong degree course or needed to figure out sooner and quicker what she wanted to do in the future, to enjoy the present and let the future take care of itself. That after uni she’d find her way into the world of work and eventually find something she loved to do.

The most important piece of advice (and one that I remember my dad giving me years ago) was to enjoy the present. That I could worry about the future all I wanted but it wouldn’t change a thing.

If you’d like to enter the competition you can find all of the info here.

What would you tell your younger self?

[INSPIRATION] How Do You Love Your Mother?

mother's day at monsoon

Let me count the ways…

With less than a week until Mother’s Day, the pressure is on to find the perfect gift to show how much you love and appreciate the most important woman in your life.

For me, time spent together is the most precious. Creating memories that I can hold dear is one of my favourite ways to treat my mum.

But sometimes I gift helps to reinforce that too!

Monsoon has curated a collection of their favourite accessories especially for Mother’s Day:

mother's day at monsoon

  1. These slate heart shaped coasters will save mum’s coffee table from water marks and show that you love her with all your heart!
  2. This jewellery pouch will keep all of her favourite pieces safe;
  3. A scarf is always a good option, whether a lovely jacquard scarf;
  4. Or a pink floral scarf;
  5. How about a little something to hang at home to remind her of you? This owl hanging ornament is cute and a little kitsch.

If you’re not sold, here a few of our favourite ways to treat mum for Mother’s Day:

  • Afternoon tea. You don’t have to spend a lot and take her out. She’ll be just as pleased with the effort put into making a cake and serving it with tea at home.
  • Sunday lunch. Everywhere has offers for Mother’s Day – take advantage and save her cooking for once!
  • Flowers. These could be bought or from the garden – just make sure to check first!
  • Frame a photo of you and your siblings. My mum loves to fill her home with photos of her two girls – always a winning gift idea.

How will you be treating your mum on Mother’s Day?

[INSPIRATION] eBay Shopping Collections

ebay collections

eBay, the online auction site where you can buy and sell almost anything and everything, has launched a new feature to present items being sold on the site: eBay collections. The new feature allows users to create themed collections and offers a new way to explore the site.

The lovely people at eBay are keeping an eye out for originality and are on the lookout for the most inventive and engaging collections. With a little imagination, your collection could end up on their main site page (we’re keeping our fingers crossed here at Sugar & Spice!).

For the past month, we’ve had exclusive access to the new collections feature and have been busy creating. We’re now ready to unveil our collections to our readers to enjoy and discover.

The collections allow you to explore the site – we’ve found pieces we’d never have found in “normal” searches and have also managed to pick up ideas for fancy dress, wedding outfits, looks for the new season and more!

Our collections reflect the themes and trends we’re loving the most right now. As our editor, Emily, plans her wedding, she was keen to create the “Here Comes The Bride” collection – filled with dresses, shoes and accessories to inspire any bride.

With the recent burst of sunshine on our little isle, we’re in the mood for summer and our “Spring/Summer” collection is filled with gorgeous summer dresses, chic and light jackets and everything else you might need for the warm weather.

Two of our favourite collections are “All That Glitters” and “Think Pink”. The first is a celebration of all things sparkly – a girl can never have too many sequins! And the second reflects this seasons trend for the colour pink, from coats and jumpers, to dresses and shoes, you’ll find something to add a little splash to your wardrobe.

Have you spotted the eBay collections on the home page yet? Have you checked them out? Will you be creating your own?

Monsoon is synonymous with ethnic inspired and boho style pieces that are just perfect for summer dressing. For SS14 they have created another collection that will float you seamlessly into the new season.

Focussing on two main trends – tribal and romantic ’70s – this collection is streamlined and wearable. Tribal is represented in a bright and vibrant way. The romantic ’70s feel is reflected in the soft pastel coloured denim and pretty broderie anglais. Long floaty dresses in scarf prints offer the festival-goer a grown-up option.

Monsoon’s bridal collection is probably one of the most affordable on the high street, whilst offering choice and on trend designs. As I start the search for my own wedding dress, I’ll definitely be visiting the rails of my local Monsoon. This season, the dresses would work perfectly for an English garden wedding – which is convenient, as this is the sort of ceremony we have opted for!
